THE STORY SO FAR....
In the last decade Ben Turnbull has been exploring the more extreme side of America. Examining some of the most alarming political and social/topical events in the U.S.A.’s divisive history in a catalogue of volumes entitled - ‘American History X’.
‘American History RemiX’, accumulates these episodes with interconnecting works, which inform a different narrative blending satire with facts in devilish detail.
From the birth of the ‘American Frontier’, to the inauguration of Donald Trump, via the Kennedy assassinations, 9/11 and Columbine, this collection of work ventures into some of the darkest days of U.S. history but brings light with it’s refreshing palate of mediums.
Created from vast collections of American comics, magazines, childhood toys and other paraphernalia, this exhibition plays with the notion of what those throwaway items represented and how they manipulated our ways of learning.
In his own unique ‘Angry Pop’ style, Turnbull takes on a road trip through recognisable iconography and gives a whole new way of looking at these innocent products from the
past by reinventing ‘American History RemiX’.
All works in ‘American History RemiX’
will be commercially available as either originals, editions or prints.
All prices listed excluding VAT.
“From his unflinching criticism of political policy and American society to the celebration of selfless acts of heroism, Turnbull’s parodies and pastiches
remain engaging and approachable; at first glance the work can even be welcoming and fun. We are then faced with the difficult ‘adult’ subjects that we struggle to understand and articulate being described and dissected through
a visual language we learnt in our formative years.”

“All created from the artist’s painstakingly researched and cleverly employed source material, namely comics.
But this isn’t straightforward collage, the medium contributes to and propels the message. Comics introduces further degrees
of critical wit and complexity”

“Many of the works hit the viewer ‘like a punch in the face’, not demanding hours of contemplation, but requiring instead an immediate emotional response, a jolt
of recognition, an acknowledgment that ‘this is what is happening now; this is what it is like’. They are raw, emotive and direct.”
